I take it back…

He’s not quite so fair of face any more.

He’s now The Elephant Man

The lump on Caspar’s head. Verrrry pretty!

This is what to expect when you have boys, right?

He thought launching himself into the bed head was a great idea. Until he hit it. Then the screaming and me grabbing him to see how how badly he’d hurt himself only to find that within seconds there was a mean looking bruise and a rock hard lump beneath that hair that needs cutting.

Never having seen anything come up that fast before I was glad Big Sis’ boyfriend hadn’t taken the car and dashed off in a frenzy to the doctor’s. I’m really not a panicky mum, but it was wicked. Luckily, my doc checked him out immediately and wasn’t concerned at all. Believe me, if I’d had to pay that $40 out of my own pocket (my doctor bulk bills for children) it would have been worth every single penny.  This one freaked me out.

Now, I’ll just be taking proud rainbow shots for the rest of the week.

The beginning of the Caspar’s rainbow.

:O Ouch! Poor little mite, and poor Mum. Glad it wasn’t anything too serious. But being a boy, I am sure that is yet to come.

    Hope it clears up quickly.

Boys, I know. I can’t imagine what’s to come. One of my friends used to make explosives and blow up neighbourhood trees. When he was 9! And he’s the artistic type!

Apparently when the lumps and bruises come up that fast, they heal just as quickly. And honestly, his skull is already thicker than mine: I’m the only one that cries when he head-butts. :)

Owie! Those head bumps *look* terrifying. Watching them come up is the worst. Had one happen at school with a grade three kid (who shouldn’t have been there)…

My oldest, at about Caspar’s age, used to get lumps like that from bumping his head against a particular coffee table just the right (or wrong!) height. When the lump went down, he’d do it again and a new one would come up. I used to think people would imagine I was bashing him, he had such a perpetual bruise. And I won’t even tell you about some of the other things my little darlings got up to – except to say that, miraculously, they mostly escaped unscathed.

Yikes! Always a terrifying moment. Geez kids are robust, thank goodness!

Oh no…the first of many more heart attacks for CM and head aches for C. I once had to take Jade (now 25) to the hospital because she fell out of her highchair and landed on the top of her head. I had self diagnosed spinal injuries, fractured skull, blood clot on the brain, stroke, you name it, I swore my poor baby had suffered it. The hospital treated me for shock (and paranoia) and sent us all home with a book on relaxing into parenthood where accidents will happen. lol…I have never forgotten it though just as you will never forget C’s Elephantitis.

:) I must admit, when I got back from the doctor’s (and the trip and check-up took all of 15minutes, I said to Big Sis that I really should have taken a moment to realise the a massive lump on the outside of his skull isn’t an indicator that he was bleeding into his brain. Or to hear my mum’s voice in my head saying, It’s alright, babies bounce.

It’s easy to be rational in hindsight! Actually it reminded me of when my daughter fell from the top of a slippery dip on to pavers. Sparing the gruesome details, she needed stitches & I was told to watch out for symptoms of concussion - vomiting and sleepiness. As soon as we got out of the car from the Drs, she threw up. Then proceeded to fall asleep on the lounge & I couldn’t wake her! Happy ending, albeit a small scar on her forehead.

I’m sure every mum has some scary, gruesome tales to tell, and mine is only a little one. But you can’t help freaking out every now and then. Our kids are a big responsibility, and boy do we love them.

The worst thing about a similar lump on my son’s head when he was 3 was that I had caused it. We were away on a camping trip and playing pitch and putt golf. I did a dreadful slice shot and my son had run into its line of sight. The noise when it hit his head was awful. By the time I got to him only seconds later the lump was as big as the golf ball that had hit him. I was terrified. I don’t turn into a quivering wreck when such emergencies occur but I did this time. I was grateful I was with a friend who could drive, safely, to the doctor’s surgery. He was fine, no concussion but a lump and bruise that lasted for ages. I would take a child to the doctor’s anytime something liked this happened though, just in case. I get reminders of this incident from my family each time they see me anywhere near seen near a golf club now. Funny in hindsight.

It is funny in hindsight. I won’t make a joke, because it sounds like you get enough of that. The thing is, I think no matter how our kids’ injuries occur, don’t parents always think it’s their fault? I do.

And head injuries definitely mean a visit to the doctor, for me.
