Changing subjects…
So, as I’ve now had some time to reassess what I want to do, I’ve updated my initial enrolment from History and Literature to History and Philosophy. I’ll probably still end up doing a Literature major, but I’m only doing a part time load this year so putting off Literature for the moment won’t make my course take any longer.
And I have this year to figure out what streams are going to be the most use when i go into teaching, and what I want to actually teach. I have no idea how that works at the moment because in my previous academic career, all I wanted to do was get my Phd and teach at the tertiary level.
I am now officially enrolled in…
- World Since 1945: War’s End to Early 70s
- Philosophy & The Meaning of Life (I hope that involves Monty Python.)
- World Since 1945: Early 70s to 90s
- Freedom & Subjectivity
I think I’m looking forward to Freedom & Subjectivity the most. It will give me a chance to indulge my Albert Camus infatuation. (Alright, obsession. I have his picture in my wallet.)
So I now I guess I just need to get ready for O-Week. (That’s when I get to get drunk and watch lots of great bands, right? I better get a babysitter.) Actually, what does an almost 35 year old wear to uni? I used to wear all sorts of wacky things, from wedding dresses to clown costumes, to just a trench coat. I used to stop and buy fresh flowers to thread through my hair, wearing maxi dresses that belonged to my mother.
It’s a whole new fashion challenge. But am I at that stage now when people will look at me and say, She’s too old to be wearing that!? Ahh, who cares. I can be a wacky geriatric if I like.

you could have a lot of fun trying to start new fashion trends you know………. and of course you’ll also have the “I don’t give a damn what you think” self assurance that comes with our old age! lmao

To the 17-year-olds you’ll look incredibly mature, exciting and SOPHISTICATED. To the lecturers you’ll be, “Oh good, someone with a bit of sense” or maybe rather threatening in case you might know enough to question them - either way, a position of respect. To the 20-somethings you’ll be that ever-so-enticing and faintly mysetrious older woman, and to the post-graduate students, you’ll be that gorgeous creature who’s always rushing off to join some bloke named Caspar whom she’s obviously besotted with more’s the pity.
And wear whatever makes you feel luscious and don’t-give-a-damn. Also whatever’s practical!
One who was there. (I was over 40!)

Geriatric? Not until at least 60, honey, and that’s only if you must use a wheelchair.
Camus? Really. I wish I could relate… when I read his work I felt underwhelmed and bored. What’s your fascination?

Looking at your picture, I find it hard to believe an article of clothing is in existence that wouldn’t look fabulous on you.

The “I-don’t-give-a-damn” look is always the best look!
As for Camus, pretty much everything is my fascination. I love the history and the politics and the philosophy of his time. I love his non-fiction more than his fiction. In fact, I still haven’t got around to reading The Outsider. My favourite novel of his is A Happy Death, but my favourite work is the Myth of Sisyphus. You know those times when you read something and recognise it as saying everything you think (only more beautifully)? That’s me and him. So don’t be surprised if you realise some time that I am underwhelming and boring.
Thanks FH, but in real life, I can’t remember the last time I put on a slick of lipgloss.
And beauty is always about confidence I think, so I need to build mine back up.

Dear mercurial scribe, you’re quite right but out a few years. I’m 68 and not geriatric.

Dear SnakyPoet - I stand corrected!

Well, ‘World Since 1945: Early 70s to 90s’ makes me feel geriatric — how can that be history, I can remember most of it, consarn it! And get off my lawn you crazy kids. Sounds fun though as does the other one. Philosophy in general is not my thing, but it would be hard not to enjoy a subject called ‘Freedom & Subjectivity’!

I know. Studying a period that finished less than a decade ago and incorporates the majority of my life as history will be odd. And of course philosophy isn’t your thing. You do practical things like astrophysics!
