My Birthday Wish List
I looked at the date today. Did you know that it was February already? It’s less than two weeks to my birthday so…
This is my wish list…
(Otherwise known as the things I really want that nobody will buy for me.)

I Need WheelsI really do need a car. You know, so I could have a life. I don’t have high standards. Small and cute will do. I’m kind of kitsch and like old things. Maybe a Hillman like my mother had. Oh, and look, there’s one for sale. It’s got a Roadworthy Certificate. And even better than the RWC, it’s got red leather seats. Now that is a perfect gift! Do you love me $4,500… |

I Love This T-Shirt!I discovered it when I first started blogging and it has since been made available to buy. It’s not as expensive as the car, but it would make me really, really happy! And I know my mother isn’t going to buy it for me. Mother’s are strange that way. And yes, I want the pink one! (PS: If nobody buys me this brilliant present, I’ll continue waiting anxiously for the day I can afford it for myself.) |

If I Only Had A Brain (Bag)Could you think of a better gift for a Cerebral Mum? Apparently the cool people discovered it at Boing Boing, but I never said I was cool. Actually, I think my source (Neurophilosophy) has far more caché. Unfortunately, nobody can buy this for me because only one was made. But it’s hand knitted so a particularly crafty admirer might be able to replicate it. |

The 7 InchesThe Asus Eee 2G Surf 7″ Yes, it’s tiny but oh, so adorable. It’s memory and RAM isn’t exactly gigantic either, but it would be fantastic now that I’m a student again. I could sit in the university cafe, sipping my macchiato, organising my notes and writing my essays. And the price is so plausible. Who thought you could by a laptop for $303.92? |
![]() Available from: Made With Molecules |
Molecular BlingI’m depressed, remember? I could use a little chemical help. That’s what it is, by the way: The molecular structure of serotonin. I love all the jewellery from Made With Molecules and they come gorgeously boxed with a little explanation. There’s some for chocolate, caffeine, and even oestrogen. Isn’t bling better that HRT? |
Of course, I shouldn’t be greedy because I’ve already received 2 gifts, courtesy of Leigh at All For Women who crunches the numbers and maintains the Top 100 Australian Women’s Blogs list. Thank you, Leigh!
And Happy Birthday to Me! (Almost)

Edited to add: And the lovely Karen over at Miscellaneous Adventures of an Aussie Mum has awarded me an E for Excellence. It must be my month! |

That Asus thingy is pretty nifty. Pity it’s not a Mac though … on the other hand, at least it runs linux, and it’s a helluva lot cheaper than a MacBook Air (and has 2 more USB slots as well). One review I read said that it uses most of the 2 Gb HD (actually flash, very fast) for the OS so there’s only about 370 Mb left for the user. So it’s probably worth spending a bit extra to upgrade to the 4 Gb version. http://www.anandtech.com/mobile/showdoc.aspx?i=3191&p=7

Nice review there. Obviously 4G would be better, but for the sake of pretty pictures; the 2G comes in pretty colours. I think they have an 8G too now.
I might have to talk to you (in the distant future) about Linux. I’d much rather have everything open source but the OS side of things (and hardware) fries my brain.

Oooh I want the shirt and the necklace too…. sorry a bit NO WAY to the handbag.
I also want Chlamydia for my birthday too. Or Ebola.
You can buy huge stuffed toys that look like viruses!

Yes - I’ve seen those. They’re really funny. I was saving them for that most ridiculous of days: Valentine’s Day. But your comment has reminded me that I didn’t include any shoes. Then again, I could fill a whole blog with the shoes I want.
I’m glad someone other than me likes the tee. My mother thinks it’s disgusting. And the handbag? Definitely not for everyone, but it is sooooo me.

I think the T-shirt is wonderful! But then, I am famous for a celebratory poem called C***
And the only reason I asterisk is so the blog cops won’t make us x-rated. Poets tend not to be afraid of words; we think we are the owners of language, lol.
I don’t know how you expect us to chip in for the car or the laptop if you don’t even tell us the actual date.

Love the tshirt, and a brain that big would be fabulous.
I have Linux on the home computer but run windows on the laptop because I’m lazy and yes, the OS fries my bag/brain.
So with you on the pretty colours - I bought my printer purely because it’s blue and shiny.

Random note - I have friends that have their beanies and knitting complete. Can you email me about where to send them?
February 9th, 2008 at 5:16 am
Wow! Congrats on the well-deserved awards!
February 9th, 2008 at 8:44 am
Oh yes, congratulations indeed on the awards! Thanks marj for remembering that bit, which the rest of us overlooked in the focus on the wonderful fantasy gifts. But then again, dear cm, in our own defence, I am sure I am not the only one who just thinks, “Well of course” when someone recognises the superiority of your blogs.
February 9th, 2008 at 11:04 am
Enola - I’m so sorry. I was meant to email you ages ago.
And thank you Snaky & Marj for the congratulations. I’m feeling rather chuffed about it.
February 9th, 2008 at 12:20 pm
Oh, and I forgot to say, SnakyPoet, it’s on the 18th.
February 9th, 2008 at 12:39 pm
Me and my big mouth. Back-pedalling fast re the car and the laptop…. Not that you don’t deserve them, dear!
February 9th, 2008 at 1:26 pm
Lol. And here I was anticipating a car driving up with a big red bow on it for my birthday!
February 9th, 2008 at 8:02 pm
Well, the idea of having to rely upon a OS without a proper command line interface (ie Windows) fries my brain! But most Linux distributions are pretty slick these days, you don’t need to muck about in the shell if you don’t want to. Ubuntu is what all the cool kids use nowadays; but I see the Eee comes with Xandros which is apparently (haven’t used it) designed to work, look and feel a lot like WinXP:

(Though I expect some of that applies only to the non-free version of Xandros, such as the Crossover plugin.) So it’s probably a good choice if you’re worried about going non-Microsoft.

Glad I could help tick some things off your birthday list
February 10th, 2008 at 9:08 am
For some of us, there’s only Macintosh. Easy operation, and the hardware always looks pretty!
February 10th, 2008 at 11:27 pm
Sorry I can’t comment on anything else but I have bought myself an Eee PC a few weeks ago (a 701 4G) and that thing rocks! It is an incredibly portable notebook for under $500. A few things
- I think 701 4G is the only model sold in Australia. All other models are probably grey imports (not that much an issue).
- 2G surf does not have the built in web-cam, which is very useful if you do a lot of video Skype.
- It has a card slot compatible with SDHC cards, and you can pick up a fast class 6 SDHC card with 8GB for around $50 from eBay. That adds to your total storage without carrying an extra thing.

Brett, you’ve made me dizzy. (Dizzier?) I had to use the command line recently to “flushdns” but apart from that I don’t think I’ve gone near it in a decade. I’m all about the GUI!
Leigh, thank you! I don’t care too much about the stats but I’ve wanted one of those pretty pink buttons for my sidebar for ages. Now I just have to get around to actually putting it there.
SnakyPoet, I agree. Macs will always take the crown at the beauty pageant.
And Scotty… Absolutely brilliant! Of course, it’s still on my “dreaming of… one day…” list even with the phenomenal price but “one day” will arrive sometime and that is some really handy info. Thank you. I’ve been meaning to pick your brain about your setup atually. You’re 100% open source, aren’t you?
Allison, I missed you in my previous replies. My apologies. (Like I said - Dizzy!) Good to know I’m not alone in the OS weakness. My brain just shuts down, the same way it does if people talk about car engines. I know I am perfectly capable of understanding it but the brain says “Not interested”. What user interface do you use with Linux?
February 12th, 2008 at 4:57 pm
That brain bag is great. Maybe an Etsy seller or some halfway affordable company will start making them.
February 12th, 2008 at 6:33 pm
Mmm. Maybe I should set up a google alert for “brain bag knockoffs”.
February 13th, 2008 at 3:18 am
Sorry, I didn’t mean to confuse the issue: really all I wanted to say was that you can get by just fine with the GUI on any decent Linux distribution these days, and that Xandros is particularly WinXP-like, so you’ll be fine with the Eee!
But you should get a Mac instead: best of both worlds
